Make a plan for packing

The best way to pack a house is to have a plan in place from the very start. If you are unsure about when to start packing for a move, we recommend making an initial plan around a month ahead of the move. At this stage, it is also a good idea to start getting some packing supplies. You will likely have a range of items that need moving, so arm yourself with bubble wrap, styrofoam and plenty of packing tape.

One of the top tips for moving house is to make an inventory of all of your items. This way, you have a clear picture of what to keep and what to leave - you won’t want to forget about crucial items like your passport and birth certificate. To make life even easier, you can make a house plan of where each item will go in your new home.

Declutter

Decluttering your house and getting rid of items you don’t need is a crucial part of the moving process. It will take much longer moving home if the items you are moving are in a messy pile, and you might even lose something valuable in the process. Decide what you can afford to live without, and be clinical - do you really need to keep a laundry bag you haven’t used in years? Think about selling items that might be more valuable to other people, and if you have friends helping with your move, reward them with something that they might find useful. As well as leaving a clean house for the next person who lives there, you will also have less to pack for your move.

Use clearly labelled boxes

When you know what you are moving, it is time to put everything in labelled boxes. By labelling the boxes, you can indicate what the box holds and what room the item is going in, helping you keep track of what you have. Make sure your boxes are the right size for each item, and try and close up any loose space to ensure that nothing valuable gets damaged on the journey. Don’t forget to put your most heavy and durable items at the bottom when you are packing.

Take extra care with fragile items

When you are packing up your belongings, remember to take extra care with valuables that are more fragile. To work out the best way to pack fragile items for moving, think about which items will need your unique attention, particularly if they are precious to your family. For artworks or mirrors, wrap these in paper before cutting two pieces of cardboard to attach to both sides, and cover them in a thick layer of bubble wrap. When it comes to plates or glass items, wrap these in newspaper and stack them to the side rather than on top of each other. Make sure you have a plan in place for all of your fragile items - from electronics to tupperware - and pay attention to the way you package them.

Pack a bag of essentials

In case of a sudden change of plan, it is always a good idea to keep a bag of essentials close by. This will include things like toiletries, a spare change of clothes, cleaning supplies and anything else that you will need on the day of your move. This is a valuable tip for moving your house quickly, as it will mean you won’t have to spend time scrambling for necessities when you are unpacking in your new home.

Ask for help with your move

If you are moving alone and feel overwhelmed, always ask for help! An extra pair of hands will make a big difference, helping to make the process more enjoyable and speedy. If you think you might need extra help, you can also look into the home move packing services in your area.

Take time to relax

We know you are probably eager to unpack and begin a new chapter in your life, but don’t stress yourself out trying to do it all in one go. It is unrealistic to try and unpack everything in one night, so do what you can and try to enjoy a well-deserved night of relaxation. The first priority on the day of your move should be setting up your new bed so that you can get some rest as soon as you feel tired.
